About FIG:

The Feminist Image Group was formed in 2009. FIG is a coalition of visual artists who meet to discuss art, see exhibitions, and support one another's careers. Artists work across many media, including drawing, painting, photography, sculpture, installation, digital media and performance.

As artists, FIG is concerned with how women continue to be portrayed in the art world. As teachers and feminists, they encourage students and colleagues to be alert to sexism in its many forms. FIG promotes an inclusive worldview that allows all voices.

Previous exhibitions include "Women by Women" at the San Diego Art Department, 2010, and "What Women Want" at the Lyceum Theater Gallery, 2011, and “Feeder” at 4141 Garage, 2012.

Teresa Baker and Asa Kvissberg

"The Mosaic of Life”

Baker… $125

Kvissberg… $800

I have responded to a mosaic made by Teresa Baker. It gave me a warm feeling of caring and trusting.

It reminds me of childhood and the mosaic of life, with its shattering effects and our life-long attempts to try to piece things together and make sense of it all. AK

Clayton Hauer and Susan Myrland

Hauer, “Superhero”

Myrland, “When Eve Met Lucy”
NFS

"It will not go out of my mind that if we pass this post and lantern either we shall find strange adventures or else some great changes of our fortunes."

-Lucy Pevensie

Michael Jacobs and Jeanne Dunn

“Irresistible Pull!”

sold together… $350

I was attracted to Michael Jacobs work because this artist is exploring themes similar to those that I explore: feeling pulled into a place... unknown territory, ways through resistance, openings, closings, pathways and tunnels. The bird (my response) is attracted to the central spot in Michael's painting: a strong magnetic pull.

Mary Ann Denton and Anna Zappoli

Zappoli, “The Outsider Parrot” and “St. Madeleine”

Denton… $20

Zappoli… $900, $1500

I am inspired and thankful to be part of Inspire/ Respond. “Every step we take in art is a world to discover.” AZ

Mitch Gricman and Kathy Nida

Gricman, “Clevester”

Nida, “Mitch 1: Perfect Life” and “Mitch 2: Monday”

Gricman… $50

Nida… $600 (bottom), $800 (right)

My art is talking to Mitch’s painting, trying to get his attention. I’m not sure he’s listening. I used some of the images Mitch did, but I Kath-i-fied them, drawing them in my own style with reference to his. The rest just filled itself in as I was staring at the painting.

Tina Frantz and Anna Stump

“Heaven Can Wait for Me”
sold together… $450

This small sculpture spoke to me.

He said, “I need a better home. With lights.”

Thanks, Tina. AS

Omar Torrez and Lisa Hutton

Hutton, “A Child Terrifies A Small Flock Of Sheep With A Fierce Threat Display: Touchdown The Rams Win!”

Hutton, “Female Mannequin Collage: Hogs Dogs Bitches and Frogs”

Torrez… $80

Hutton… $200, $300

Beth Navarro and Lauren Carrera

“Day at the Beach”

Navarro… $80

Carrera… $450

Beth Navarro’s charming painting in blues and greens with orange brushstrokes brought me back to summer days at the water’s edge. I was reminded of childhood, as the painting evoked both the community pool with seemingly hundreds of children and adults splashing and swimming, as well as languid days at the Jersey shore where the sounds of children playing rang in the breeze over the rhythmic lapping of waves on the shore. Lazing on beach chairs under beach umbrellas, we absorbed the sun and sounds of summer. LC

Linda Rubin and Amy Paul

Paul, “Stripes”
Rubin… $80
Paul… $295

George Cline and Daphne Hill

"How We All Got Here"
Cline… NFS

Hill… $250

While Sophie's Center in El Cajon is busting at the seams with amazing work by its students, George's was the only piece that really spoke to my keen interest in biology and human sexuality. I hope that he likes what I have done in response to his educational work about the male reproductive system. His opinion is really the only one that matters. DH

Susan Warin and Prudence Horne

“Neighborhood”

Warin… $80
Horne… $400

Norine O’Boyle and Jennifer Bennett

“Dan Wheldon Tribute”
sold together… $850

Daniel Wheldon was a racecar driver from England. He was the 2005 Indy Racing League Series champion, and winner of the Indy 500 in both 2005 and 2011. Wheldon died from injuries shortly after a collision on lap 11 at the 2011 IndyCar World Championship in Las Vegas on October 16.

Linda Rubin and Michele Guieu

“The Traveling Piece”
sold together… $450

All the artists participating to the Inspire/Respond project chose a piece at Madeleine Sophie's center in San Diego to work from. Living in the Bay area, I could not go get the piece. So Anna chose a print for me by Linda Rubin. She gave Linda’s piece to her sister Molly who was traveling back from San Diego to Palo Alto. A few days ago I met Molly at her office which was really nice. We looked together at Linda’s piece which I was seeing for the first time. A beautiful print of a blue bird. May be a migratory bird?

I took it back to my house where I kept it in sight. I decided to take the piece to where the birds are around here, a place I love: the bay. Milo, my 11 year old son just ruptured his Achilles tendon. We could not really walk much but he, his brother Harper and I, went to the bay in Mountain View and took some nice pictures there with Linda’s piece. The birds were peacefully walking, searching for food, floating around, flying above, chirping and singing. It was nice to see Linda’s blue bird there too!

After we came back home I thought that Linda’s piece was the ‘traveling piece’ and my piece would be the envelope of Linda’s piece on its way back to San Diego.

I love this project and I am glad to be part of it. Thank you Linda for the inspiration!

Patricia Long and Helen Redman

“Wilting Blooms #1”

Long… collection of H. Redman

Redman… $975

I love the joyous color and simplicity of Patricia Long’s fabric pillow and how she has made the ubiquitous smiley face into a floral shape with buttons for eyes. I, too, create anthropormorphic, hybrid images, many with floral motifs, and love to play with eye shapes. In Wilting Blooms, I combine skull-sockets with eyeglasses, sprout flower petals from my fingers, and grow an amaryllis plant from my shoulder. Looking at Patricia’s art, I see the bloom of youth. The self I see in my drawing is a metaphorical reflection of the natural cycles of birth, death and rebirth.
