[Exhibition Description]
A pop-up exhibition and reading of artists’ reflections about time, their work, and the lives they have led, based on an ongoing Instagram project @collectiveretrospective created by Feminist Image Group and guests, coordinated by Cindy Zimmerman and Judith Christensen.
For the project, each participant chose two artworks: one created recently, the other created at least a decade prior. In the text, the artist could explore through-lines, detours, or convergences between the two artworks. Considerations included meaning or purpose, process, media, techniques, formal elements, or conditions in one’s life or the world at the time. Some of those artworks and a reading of some of the texts were featured in this one-day only event. Also on display was a printed portfolio of the complete project.
According to Christensen, “the concept of ‘Collective Retrospective’ is straightforward enough to seem simple: then and now; compare and contrast; two images and text that is limited in length by Instagram’s parameters (2200 characters with spaces). Taken together [the artists’ contributions] reveal lifetimes of experience informed by perceptive hindsight and profound self-reflection. This project responds to an urgency both to speak and to make art. It is a project in which the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.”
