Mind the Gap 2018

[Location]

Southwestern College Art Gallery, Chula Vista, CA

[Exhibition Description]

"Mind the Gap," curated by Prudence Horne at the Southwestern College Art Gallery in Chula Vista, CA, addressed the current societal challenge of a widening gap between the sexes. This exhibition, which ran from March 15 to April 19, represented an earnest attempt by the members of the Feminist Image Group (FIG) to bridge this divide. Uniquely, FIG members invited male artists to exhibit alongside them, initiating a creative dialogue that underscored the connections between genders. The goal of this collaboration was not only to highlight these inherent connections but also to stimulate broader conversations aimed at fostering unity and understanding.

The exhibit featured a range of artworks that, together, created a tapestry of perspectives on gender relations, exploring both the differences and the similarities that define us. A highlight of the event was the "Tug of War" performance by Brian and Ryan, a symbolic representation of the ongoing struggles and eventual cooperation between genders. This engaging piece, along with the rest of the show, underscored the possibility of reconciliation and mutual respect through shared creative endeavors.

Funded by a generous grant from the Southwestern College Foundation, "Mind the Gap" invited viewers to consider the ways in which art could serve as a conduit for societal change and gender harmony.
